Can periodontal disease affect other parts of the body?

Oral infections are not limited to damaging teeth and gums. There is currently a strong link between periodontal and systemic diseases, as they share common risk factors.

What causes gum disease?

The mouth is full of bacteria. These bacteria are constantly forming a sticky, colorless film called “plaque” that builds up on the teeth. Brushing and flossing help remove this plaque.

When plaque is not removed, it hardens and forms deposits called “calculus” or “tartar,” which cannot be removed by brushing alone. Only a professional cleaning performed by a dentist can remove tartar.

The longer plaque and tartar remain on the teeth, the more damage they can cause. Bacteria cause an inflammation of the gums called “gingivitis.”

When gingivitis is not properly treated, it can turn into “periodontitis.” In periodontitis, the gums pull away from the teeth and form spaces or pockets that become infected.

The toxins produced by bacteria and the body’s natural response to infection begin to destroy the bone and tissue that hold the teeth in place. When periodontitis is not properly treated, the bones, gums, and supporting tissues are destroyed. Over time, the teeth become loose and are lost.
